NANI Celebrates-National Donate Life Month

April is National Donate Life Month and it’s time to celebrate! Throughout this month we honor the organ and tissue donors, and celebrate the tens of thousands of lives saved through organ transplantation. More than 34,000 individuals received the lifesaving gift of an organ transplant across the U.S. While we celebrate, we must still call attention though to the fact that nearly 115,000 individuals are still waiting for the gift of life – an organ transplant.

National Donate Life Month is one of the most important months of the year. Established by Donate Life America, this month encourages Americans to register as organ, eye and tissue donors. We also celebrate those who have given the ultimate gift organ donation.

When you get a kidney transplant, a healthy kidney is placed inside your body to do the work your own kidneys can no longer do. If you have two healthy kidneys, you may be able to donate one of your kidneys to enhance or save someone else’s life. Both you and the person who receives your kidney can live with just one healthy kidney. If your kidneys are failing, you may have the opportunity for a transplant instead of dialysis treatment. Many people feel that a kidney transplant offers more freedom and a better quality of life than dialysis, but it is not for everyone.

Ask your doctor about transplants and how you can be added to a kidney transplant waitlist or how you might shorten your wait for a kidney by finding a living donor, someone you know who is willing to donate a kidney to you. We know our patients look to their clinicians as their advocates and count on our commitment to helping save lives, so that our NANI doctors have joined in outreach efforts to promote donation and donor registration.

When it is your turn for kidney transplant surgery, you want to be prepared. If you see a nephrologist now and are hoping for a transplant, prepare your body by adopting a healthy lifestyle every day. Your doctor can guide you to preparing for your transplant.

Many NANI doctors also care for patients after their kidney transplant surgery. Our nephrologists enjoy the chance to help patients live longer, fuller lives after they have a kidney transplant. If you are considering a kidney transplant or need a kidney doctor, contact a NANI nephrologist or visit https://www.nephdocs.com.
